Autism Assessment and Diagnosis

What Is Involved In Autism Diagnosis And Assessment?

—--------------------------------------—--------------------------------------—--------------------------------------—-----------------------Autism assessment  and diagnosis involves a thorough assessment by a paediatrician, speech pathologist and clinical psychologist.

Therapists assess a child’s ability across the following areas:

  1. Social interaction

  2. Communication

  3. Behaviour

  4. Play

For more information on Autism Assessment and Diagnosis visit Raising Children Network:

http://raisingchildren.net.au/articles/autism_spectrum_disorder_diagnosis.html

Using structured observations, standardised tests and parent interviews these professionals will then decide whether a child meets the criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder according to DSM-IV-TR criteria. This is listed in the following documents :

http://raisingchildren.net.au/verve/_resources/DSM_IV_autistic_disorder_sm.pdf

What Is The Importance Of Early Diagnosis?

—--------------------------------------—--------------------------------------—--------------------------------------—-----------------------If a child is suspected of having Autism Spectrum Disorder it is important to get a diagnosis as soon as possible as early intervention is essential.

There are also government grants allocated to assist children with diagnosis of ASD under the age of 6 years (FaHCSIA Helping Children with Autism Package). Therefore, it is beneficial to get the diagnosis when a child is young in order to be eligible for government funding.

What Is Beneficial About Doing This Assessment Privately?

—--------------------------------------—--------------------------------------—--------------------------------------—-----------------------There are often long waitlists for public assessments and diagnosis and therefore families often choose to have it done in private setting to reduce valuable time families and children could spend getting therapy and intervention.

In addition, if families choose to have a diagnosis and assessment at Kids Biz they can also choose to have therapy and intervention continued with our clinic. This will depend on the outcome of the assessment and the wishes of you family. However, many families find that if they have a pre-established rapport with health professionals they are most likely to want to continue their therapy with the same service.
