As part of therapy we offer parent training covering a variety of topics related to a child’s emotional, social, physical, sensory and cognitive development. Programs vary in length and run at different times so click here to find out what groups are coming up soon.
The following are a list of parents training we offer:

1. DIR® Floortime
This is a three week training course that runs for one hour. It includes a presentation conducted by one of our health professions which shows relevant video clips, case studies and discussions. There will be time for questions and all parents will receive a manual outlining basic principles of DIR® Floortime and how they relate to home and school.
2. Attachment: Building Stronger Relationships
Attachment refers to the strength of bond that a child has with their parent. This presentation runs for an hour and serves to outline different attachment styles and how best to assist children to develop strong relationships with parents.
3. Anxiety: How does it present in children?
This is a one hour presentation on anxiety in children. Anxiety in children is becoming more and more common and can often present as behaviour problems or over compliance. This presentation outlines how to identify anxious children and provides some strategies on how to parent anxious children.
4. Sensory Processing: What is it and what can we do about it?
This is a one hour introductory presentation on sensory processing. Sensory processing refers to the body’s ability to receive information from our surrounding through our senses, put it together and then react in an appropriate and meaningful way. Children with sensory processing disorders may exhibit an array of behaviours, some of which include being hyperactive or hypoactive, distractible, rigid or avoidant of certain situations. This presentation outlines methods to identify and assist children with sensory processing difficulties.
5. Developing Helping hands
This presentation runs for one hour and outlines the prerequisites for hand skills, how to identify if children have mastered these and how to assist them to enhance current hand skills at home.
6. Making my Body Stronger
This presentation runs for one hour and aims to explain how children physically develop. It outlines areas of difficulty, how they present and how to assist children to enhance their core strength to enable them to develop the more refined muscle strength and movement needed for fine motor tasks such as writing and drawing.
7. Visual perceptual skills
Visual processing refers to the way a child interprets and makes sense of what is seen. This presentation outlines what visual perception is and how dysfunction occurs. Children need visual perceptual skills in all areas of their life particularly in the classroom and at home. This presentation outlines how you can identify difficulties in visual perception on how best to assist children develop these skills at home.
8. Communication and Language
This presentation runs for one hour and outlines common difficulties associated with speech and language. It outlines the process of language development and provides some strategies of how to encourage children to develop foundational language skills.
